This 1937 show tune is a solid classic to choose if you’re auditioning for an older show. Its also a great choice for teen belters with a good middle voice; it provides enough of a challenge without too much of a chance to strain the voice, as it doesn’t sit too high. This song sits lower, so range-wise it’s not difficult. But it  runs  for six  minutes, so if youre singing it for an audition, make sure you perform the cut that shows you off best! Its also  ideal for a dancer who  belts. After all, these ARE the composers of “Chicago”! I’m The Greatest Star  Funny Girl It’s been said “People” should be  off-limits, as it belongs to Barbra (and I’ll have to agree with that!), but as far as I’m concerned, singers should feel free to use the REST of the great songs in “Funny Girl”! The big belting doesn’t really come until the end of this song, so I’d say this is more for the intermediate belter. The bulk of the song lies in mid-voice and is meant to be sung with TONS of conviction… and serious comedic chops! 6. Live Out Loud  A Little Princess This is for younger belters! Its  a wonderful, uplifting tune that is sure to wow. Its also very good for those who have more of a soprano-ish quality to their voice. (Soprano/belt is definitely a voice type! Lucky ladies like the fabulous Sierra Boggess in the  video below are proof they exist.) The melody is gorgeous and quick-moving, and it’s just under three  minutes. Even students who aced every single one of their high school exams should be prepared for a few differences. The reality is that not only is college harder, but its different. Unknown factors can leave students feeling completely overwhelmed and unable to focus on their study tasks. Students who are unsure what to expect the first year of finals should think about the most common things that can trip up them and their peers. 1. Concentration College finals will take an immense amount of concentration. Students should get used to studying the topic at hand for multiple hours at a time. Although students can take as many breaks as they want during their study sessions, they wont be able to take any breaks during the exam. Its tempting to think that a final exam will last for the 55 minutes of the class period, but the block schedule for finals week is completely different. That chemistry class from 10 a.m. 10:55 a.m. may be from 10 a.m. 12:00 p.m. during finals week. Students should be prepared to concentrate on the information and be able to demonstrate their knowledge for well more than an hour (READ: The Students Guide to Study Breaks). 2. Content In college, the content students may be tested on is pretty much and ‘anything goes’ situation. Although some professors will give students an itemized study guide, most wont and they dont have to. Anything that was taught during the semester can be on the final. One thing that most students forget about is that the information they’re tested on may not necessarily have been covered in class. If the syllabus says chapter 3, then chapter 3 might be on the test even if the professor never talked about it. Always make sure to read the fine print on the syllabus (READ: How to Get an A Before the End of the Semester). 3. Explain Yourself In high school, most students took tests in a matching or multiple choice format. However, this will only be true part of the time in college. Most professors want to be absolutely sure that their students understood the information before they put their name behind a specific grade. College students should be expected to write in an open-answer format or in an essay format, meaning they have to be able to communicate themselves well in words. Additionally, many students think their lecture class final exam (where are there are 200+ students) will have to have a multiple choice format because the professor simply wouldnt have time to grade all of the essays. Dont forget, these large classes have teaching assistants to help with grading and other tasks. 4. Extra Credit? (nope) In high school, many students have the opportunity for extra credit (with the exception of AP courses). This is generally not the case in college. In high school students are still learning how to study and absorb material, which is why teachers may allow for extra credit if they think its necessary. In college, students are expected to be able to manage their own time, budget their tasks, and approach the professor for extra help if necessary. College students should never assume they can make up a test or quiz with an extra credit assignment (READ: Tips From an Irvine Private Tutor: Avoiding Stress During Finals). 5. Partial answers? (nope) Many high school teachers will also give credit for partial answers in an open-ended question format. Again, at this age students are still learning how to be students. If they had a question 80% correct their teacher may give them half a point. Once in college, students should not expect this type of leniency. If an answer doesnt cover all of the points required by the question, it’ll most certainly be counted as incorrect. Students  will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge for every part of the textbook and additional learning materials, not just part of it. Literacy is such a necessity in today`s world, it`s difficult to imagine how anyone could get by, being unable to compose an email or text message, read a street name, or write a letter. We may enjoy good literary standards, but unfortunately there are a great many people living in parts of the world who are not so fortunate. In the world`s poorest countries illiteracy is the norm, with nine out of ten children being unable to read or write at the age of ten. This statistic is effectively mirrored in the wealthier countries, where only 9% of children of the same age are illiterate. The problem isn`t just confined to a small group of countries though - a recent study compiled by the UN and the World Bank looked into the levels of literacy among 135 low and middle income countries, and found that more than half of 10 year old children were unable to read a simple text. The World Bank is funding a programme which aims to cut the rate of `learning poverty` by at least half by 2030. It defines learning poverty as the percentage of ten year olds who cannot understand and read a simple story. After compiling a vast database with the UNESCO institute of statistics, it estimated that currently 53% of children fall into this category in low and middle income countries. `In poor countries, the level is as high as 80 percent. Such high levels of learning poverty are an early warning sign that all global educational goals and other related sustainable development goals are in jeopardy.` The World bank is joining other institutions in tackling the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - 8 targets that each of the 191 UN member states agreed to tackle back in the year 2000. Here are the list of these eight Millennium Development Goals: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Achieve universal primary education. Promote gender equality and empower women. Reduce child mortality. Improve maternal health. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. Ensure environmental sustainability. Develop a global partnership for development. It is of course commendable that these targets have been set, and encouraging that international financial institutions such as the World Bank are involved - and even if the initial deadline for the completion of these goals was 2015, this should be taken as evidence of the entrenched and profound nature of the problems, rather than as a failure of the programme. The World Bank describes its new target of cutting `learning poverty` by at least half before 2030 as `ambitious, yet achievable.` The Unesco Institute for Statistics however has published a report that declares matters are progressing too slowly, saying the new global goal on achieving quality education for all by the year 2030 is unlikely to be met. It has predicted that, given the current rate of improvement, approximately 43% of children will still have not attained the required standard of reading proficiency by the deadline. In order for the target to be reached improvements would have to meet an `unprecedented` scale. With 260 million children currently not in school, it is easy to understand the huge scale of the challenges. Learning how to read is a `milestone in every child`s life`, according to Jaime Saavedra, the global director for education global practice at the World Bank. Reading is `a precondition for active participation in society a gateway to all other learning outcomes`, he said. `Eliminating learning poverty is as urgent as eliminating extreme poverty, stunting or hunger,` Saavedra went on to say Education standards in the UK are fairly high in global terms. Though we fall outside the top 20 in the PISA rankings (which primarily measures mathematics and the sciences), when it comes to basic literacy standards the country performs fairly well.
